Adding Palm Trees into Your Landscape Design

Adding palm trees to your landscape design is the perfect way to add a tropical feel, but it is important to know that planting palm trees requires research and a plan in order to create a design that works.  It is ok to have an idea of a design concept that interest you, but before you go planting anything, make sure you do your research and have a plan.

It is best to start your palm tree landscape project when the weather is warm, such as in the spring or summer, since palm trees grow best in warm climates.   If you live in a tropical climate, however, anytime is an ideal time to start your project.

Palm trees require good drainage for the best survival.  Therefore, it is also best to plant palm trees after a heavy rainy winter when the soil is has the most moisture.

Researching Palm Trees

One of the most important things you will want to research is the growth pattern of the palm tree species you are interested in planting.   You will want to know how wide and high each species grow in order to plan accordingly.  If you do not research the growth pattern of the species before you plant, you may find that the roots will end up causing severe damage to your foundation, walking paths, retaining walls, pool, etc. in the long run.

You will also want to research the sun and water requirements for each species.  Some species might not survive in certain areas of your yard.  Instead of wasting time and money, you should research which species would work best for your yard.

Draw Up Plans

Once you have done your researched, you can start by drawing up detailed plans.  Start by visualizing where you want shade and what levels of height you want and then draw up your design plans.  You will want to design something that levels the different heights and widths in order to have a cohesive pattern.  The most important thing to remember is that you do not want to just start planting San Diego palm trees without a plan, because without a plan you can easily end up with an oversized and disorganized yard that lacks any design.
