What you can do if you don’t want to spent too much money on plants is by propagating existing plants from your backyard (if you have any) or from friends/family.
Alternatively, you can grow new plants from seeds.
You have to know what kind of plants are suitable for your garden.
If you are planning to plant these plants to the ground, you don’t need to spend any money for containers.
But if you do want to have some container plants, there are a lot of things that you already have in your house that you might not want to use anymore that can be used as a pot. For example, old buckets, old rubbish bin, unused plastc cups, plastic bottles, etc. Just make sure there are good drainage by poking holes at the bottom.
cut out a circular area of sod, about 3" deep, fill it with small stones, and add some long lasting perennials, like marigolds. Marigolds are inexpensive, flower in mid to late June and last until snow is on the ground. Bird feeders are great since they add activity to the yard, and just watching birds is relaxing. For a small fee, join the arbors day foundation, and you can get tree seedlings sent to you. If you plant a tree, just be sure its in a area where you will have room for it to grow into a mature tree. Just having a area for a picnic table and a hammock is great, possibly a grill. Lots of ideas, just need more details of the size of the area your talking about, what climate.
Go to http://www.eRoyalDutch.com. They are a discount plant supply company that specializes in perennials, shrubs, groundcovers, and bulbs. They’re prices are super easy and they show some diagrams on how to plant the plants to get a certain look. Perennials are great because they come up year after year, so do bulbs. With this company, you’ll pay a very low price and your plants will come up year after year without having to replant them. Definitely check this website out.
There are many ways to create a lush garden without breaking the bank. You can ask friends and family for starts of their plants. You can start your own perennials by seed, you can buy plants and trees and shrubs at flea markets and on ebay. There are lots of web sites that offer plants and seeds for SASE only. Plant Traders web site is a great one, as they not only have plant trades, there is a wealth of information on gardening. Here is the link if you are interested. You have to register to enter, but it is free.

Good luck and happy gardening!
Not sure exactly what you are looking for but DO NOT buy plants through the mail or on the Internet. You may not be buying what you think you are buying. Going to your local garden center is you best bet. Not Home Depot, Walmart, Menards, etc. Local nurseries will have plants that are meant to grow in your climate or growing zone. The important thing to remember is you get what you pay for. If you can’t afford to landscape your whole yard talk to a landscape designer to draw a plan for your whole yard or what ever you want and install it one piece at a time. Like just do the front of the house or just put a patio in. Break up the cost and install when you can afford to install that way you will have a professional looking landscape and not a jumbled mess. It is easy to see a professionally designed landscape vs a homeowner weekend project.
